Staff urged to claim homeworking tax relief

HMRC is urging employed workers who have been told to work from home by their employer to claim tax relief on higher household bills they have incurred.

From 6 April 2020, employers have been able to pay staff up to £6 a week tax-free to cover additional costs if they have had to work from home.

The exact amount employees receive in tax relief depends on the rate at which they pay tax, with basic-rate tax-payers able to reduce the tax they pay each year by £62.40 (20 per cent of £6 a week) and higher-rate tax-payers by £124.80 (40 per cent of £6 a week). Between 1 and 11 October, some 54,800 claims were received by HMRC.

Employees who have not received the working-from-home expenses payment direct from their employer can apply to receive the tax relief from HMRC through its new online portal at https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home

Staff do not need to provide evidence to show their bills have increased unless they are applying for tax relief on costs above the £6 per week flat rate.

HMRC is also reminding employed workers, such as healthcare workers and care home staff, that they can also claim tax relief on work-related expenses, including cleaning their work uniforms.

Those who clean, replace or repair uniform or tools, or pay fees and subscriptions, for their work are being urged to apply online directly to HMRC and see instantly if they are eligible for tax relief on work expenses.

Furlough Extension: What is covered by the UK Government

Workers across the United Kingdom will benefit from increased support with a five-month extension of the furlough scheme into Spring 2021, the Chancellor has announced.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will now run until the end of March with employees receiving 80% of their current salary for hours not worked.

Similarly, support for millions more workers through the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) will be increased, with the third grant covering November to January calculated at 80% of average trading profits, up to a maximum of £7,500.

There are currently no employer contribution to wages for hours not worked. Employers will only be asked to cover National Insurance and employer pension contributions for hours not worked. For an average claim, this accounts for just 5% of total employment costs or £70 per employee per month.

The CJRS extension will be reviewed in January to examine whether the economic circumstances are improving enough for employers to be asked to increase contributions.

Under the CJRS extension, eligible employees will receive 80% of their usual salary for hours not worked, up to a maximum of £2,500 per month. Businesses will have flexibility to use the scheme for employees for any amount of time and shift pattern, including furloughing them full-time.

The extended CJRS will operate as the previous Scheme did, with businesses being able to claim either shortly before, during or after running payroll. Claims can be made from 8am Wednesday 11 November. Claims made for November must be submitted to HMRC by no-later than 14 December 2020. Claims relating to each subsequent month should be submitted by day 14 of the following month, to ensure prompt claims following the end of the month which is the subject of the claim.

The JRB will not be paid in February. The purpose of the JRB was to encourage employers to keep people in work until the end of January. However, as the CJRS is being extended to the end of March, the policy intent of the JRB falls away.

Two Rivers Recruitment boosts team with hire of highly experienced consultant Marion McColl

Marion McColl, a highly experienced recruitment sector consultant, has joined the team at rapidly expanding Glasgow-based recruitment specialist, Two Rivers.

Marion, whose early career experience was in the international freight and shipping industry before she was herself head-hunted into the recruitment sector, specialised initially in recruiting candidates for management posts in logistics and distribution.

Later, she held senior recruitment roles in Aberdeen where she focused on the energy sector before spending some years in Kazakhstan. Now, once again UK-based, she will be relocating from Aberdeen to join Two Rivers Recruitment in Glasgow.

Marion said: “My experience in the energy sector has given me a strong understanding of employers’ needs in transferable engineering skills and it is this, as well as my extensive  contacts book of employers and candidates which has, I believe, made me an attractive senior consultant hire for Two Rivers”.

Eddie Finnigan, Two Rivers founder and managing director, said: “I met Marion some years ago when I was in an HR role at the food distributors, Brakes Plc. She was great to work with: efficient, fun, and totally reliable. She also brought us some outstanding candidates who went on to do great work for my employer.

“When I heard Marion was back in the UK and willing to re-locate to Glasgow, I jumped at the opportunity to invite her to join us”.

Marion added, " I am delighted to have joined Two Rivers at this historically important time, since the only way for the economy is up”.

The company’s newest member brings valuable additional skills to the agency which, specialising in aerospace, engineering, renewables, business support and HR, recorded a record annual turnover of £1.2m in the year to 31 December 2019.

This represented a 50 per cent leap on turnover of £800k in 2018 and, but for the interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, Two Rivers was set to continue growing strongly, with forecast turnover in the current year of £2m.

Much of the company’s success has arisen from working with global giants including Serco and BAE Systems, as well as delivering its services to smaller, local SMEs, a key channel in the company’s growth plans.

Its relationships are also strong with other aero engineering businesses throughout the UK, as well as with the talented candidates, from Elgin to Exeter, who populate the Two Rivers database.

Mr Finnigan added: “The pandemic has had a severe impact on the recruitment sector but given that many of the roles we fill in, for example, the Middle East, have a six months’ lead-time, we’ve found that our work flow since March has been steady.

“The ability to work remotely, liaising sometimes daily with customers and candidates, means that we have been able to maintain our usual levels of service. Last year, in what was, in effect only our second year as an independent business, we secured 1143 candidate placements for both temporary and permanent positions.

“This year, since our principal strengths are our global reach and our dedication to making businesses more successful by helping them secure the people they need, we are running just a bit ahead.”

Unusually for a recruiter, Mr Finnigan, is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and worked for many years as an HR specialist including spells with BAE Systems, Schlumberger and Emirates Airline.

Business consultant Alan Crockert joins Two Rivers Recruitment

Alan Crockert has joined Scottish-based recruitment specialist, Two Rivers Recruitment, as a senior advisor to the board.

Eddie Finnigan, Two Rivers founder and managing director, said: “Alan is a man I have wanted to appoint to our advisory board for a number of years. He has extensive experience of overseeing successful decision-making in rapidly growing recruitment companies.

“Handling rapid growth is a quality business challenge to have to cope with, but it needs to be tempered by experience and wise counsel and with Alan’s insight and expertise I believe the business will benefit hugely.”

A well-known figure in the UK recruitment industry and a main board director over thirty years of a series of Scotland-based recruitment companies, all of which prospered under his guidance, Alan’s focus is in working with business owners who need additional, objective support in developing themselves and their organisations.

As an active mentor and advisor to business owners and boards across a range of sectors, he is now involved with Two Rivers at a crucial stage of its development where his role will be to provide strategic, operational and personal development support to the board and employees.

He said, " Eddie's background in HR brings a different perspective to the business, which includes an unwavering set of values, communicated clearly and maintained throughout the business, and I'm delighted to be on board at this exciting time of growth. The business is now positioned to attract new talent to satisfy its growth plans over the next 12 months.”

The company’s newest member brings valuable additional skills to the agency. The new appointment comes as the firm continues its expansion both at home and abroad and follows the recent appointment to the Two Rivers advisory board of career human resources executive Jim Drain as a non-executive director.

Set up at the start of 2018, Two Rivers provides both permanent and temporary staffing solutions across the engineering, aerospace and business support sectors.

A finalist in the “Best Newcomer” category of the s1jobs Recruitment Awards in 2019, its clients include leading organisations in the fields of civil engineering, aerospace, renewables, and business support services.

Glasgow Recruitment Agency Backs Young People

Two members of staff at Two Rivers Recruitment have joined founder Eddie Finnigan in the MCR Pathways programme to assist disadvantaged young people from Glasgow’s East End.

Recruitment consultant Carlé Liddell (pictured below), who joined the firm in the spring of last year, has completed her training with the charity and has now been assigned as a mentor. Natasha Groundwater, who joined Two Rivers in September 2019, has started her training in preparation for becoming a mentor.

Eddie, who founded Two Rivers in 2018, has been a mentor with MCR Pathways for the past four years.

Originally set up in 2007 with a programme operating out of St Andrew’s Secondary in Glasgow, MCR Pathways has expanded its network into schools throughout nine local authorities across Scotland. The charity recruits, trains and matches each volunteer mentor with a young person facing the challenges of being a carer, or from otherwise disadvantaged circumstances.

The aim is to ensure all young people get the same educational outcomes, career opportunities and life chances, regardless of background.

Eddie said these goals reverberate with the ethos of Two Rivers, which provides both permanent and temporary staffing solutions across the aerospace, engineering and business support sectors.

“To be successful in recruitment, you have got to focus on building relationships, and that’s what the MCR programme is all about,” he explained.

When you look at the principles of what MCR stands for, that is what resonated with us. It fits perfectly with our wider purpose of helping people where we can.

“No one here has been pressured into joining the MCR programme – we just see it as the right thing to do. So it’s great that Carlé and Natasha have become involved.”

Mentors spend an hour each week listening to and encouraging a young person at school. The two are ideally matched when the young person is in the third year of secondary school, with the relationship running until he or she completes their secondary education.

External research has shown that care-experienced and disadvantaged young people who have a mentor have significantly higher staying-on rates, attainment and progression to positive destinations such as college, university and employment. MCR currently supports 2,300 young people, and is aiming to raise that to 5,000.

The charity was founded by business entrepreneur Iain MacRitchie, who made his career in by turning around failing corporations.

A finalist in the “Best Newcomer” category of the s1jobs Recruitment Awards earlier this year, Two Rivers has gone from strength to strength since it began trading two years ago. Major clients include BAE Systems and other leading organisations in the fields of engineering, renewables, and business support services.

New appointments bolster expansion at Two Rivers Recruitment

Scottish-based recruitment specialist Two Rivers Recruitment has made two further pivotal appointments as the firm continues its expansion both at home and abroad.

Career human resources executive Jim Drain has joined as the Glasgow-based agency’s first non-executive director, with a focus on guiding Two Rivers’ development in the construction and engineering sectors, where the company’s customers include BAE Systems.

Meanwhile, the newly created post of resourcing and office manager has been filled by Natasha Groundwater (pictured below), who will also take responsibility as account manager for some of the firm’s key clients.

These latest appointments follow the recruitment earlier this year of Carle Liddell, 24, whose primary responsibility is Two Rivers’ aerospace, defence and engineering recruitment business.

Two Rivers founder and managing director Eddie Finnigan said the team’s newest members bring valuable additional skills to the agency, which is on course to break £1m in revenues in the current financial year.

“We have been extremely pleased with our success so far since we began trading as Two Rivers at the start of 2018,” Eddie said.

“Our focus is on hiring the right people to help our clients’ businesses thrive, and we do the same for ourselves. There is no hiding place in a small business – you have got to be able to step up to the plate, and Carle is already doing just that.”

A graduate in social sciences from the Cumbernauld Campus of New College Lanarkshire, Carle joined Two Rivers from Just Eat, where she previously headed a B2B sales team of 23 people. She is being trained to specialise in the engineering sector, freeing up time for Eddie to focus on the agency’s continued expansion and diversification.

Jim Drain, 62, retired last year from his post as HR Manager on the High Speed 2 railway project for BBV Joint Ventures. Before that, he spent nearly seven years with civil engineering and infrastructure specialist Barhale, where he was head of training and human resources.

Now based in Birmingham, Jim first met Two Rivers founder Eddie Finnigan when the latter joined catering wholesaler Brakes as a graduate HR officer in 1999. Jim was at that time the regional HR manager in Scotland for Brakes, a post that he held until his departure in 2004 to join Morgan Sindall in the construction sector.

The two re-connected six years ago when Eddie returned from working in the Middle East to set up his own recruitment firm in Glasgow.

“I am quite excited because Eddie is very passionate about this business,” Jim said. “There are some big, big players in this field, but Eddie’s approach is unique.

“Although he is working in recruitment, he comes from an HR background, and those are two very different things. Recruitment is too often about simply hitting targets and filling that day’s quotas, whereas Eddie understands his clients’ long-term objectives, and how to help achieve those goals.”

Eddie said Jim will provide invaluable guidance as Two Rivers seeks to cement its position as one of the best recruitment agencies for the engineering and construction sectors.

“Jim has a wealth of experience and contacts, so we are extremely fortunate to have him on board,” Eddie said. “He will help us build relationships and grow the business in a sensible, measured and sustainable way.”

Natasha joins Two Rivers from thermal specialist SHARC Energy Systems, where she was office manager in Glasgow.

“Natasha was very highly-valued at SHARC, so we know that she will be a great asset here at Two Rivers,” Eddie added. “She will be able to grow along with the company as we expand our business.”

Set up at the start of 2018, Two Rivers is on course to break the £1m turnover barrier, providing both permanent and temporary staffing solutions across the engineering, hospitality and human resources sectors. A finalist in the “Best Newcomer” category of the s1jobs Recruitment Awards earlier this year, its clients include leading organisations in the fields of civil engineering, aerospace, renewables, catering and business support services.
